Eating reasonably while traveling — hotels, flights, trains and road trips

Travel often means hotel breakfasts, airport kiosks, dhabas at midnight or whatever’s available on a long drive. When you can’t follow your usual meal and workout routine, what practical choices have worked for you? Share specific, repeatable habits: things you pack, protein options you rely on at stations or hotels, hydration and caffeine hacks, quick restaurant swaps, and how you balance eating reasonably without trying to be perfect.

I started carrying a small “deli” snack bag that works for the kids and me: single-serve hummus, tuna or bean pouches, string cheese, rice cakes and a few apples or carrot sticks — it means we can skip airport chips. On arrival I usually swing by a supermarket for a rotisserie chicken, Greek yogurt and fruit so hotel breakfasts/dinners don’t force takeout, and I sip sparkling water with a tea bag instead of grabbing another sugary drink. I try to pick a straight-up protein + veggies at restaurants and share sides when needed — not perfect, but keeps things reasonable and less stressful with the family.

I travel a lot for weekend badminton tournaments, so I keep it simple: three single-serve protein powder sachets in my carry-on plus a collapsible shaker, a ziplock of mixed nuts and dried fruit, instant oats packets and a couple of instant coffee/tea sticks. At hotels I go for an omelette or yogurt+fruit at breakfast, ask for dressings/sauces on the side, and at dhabas I pick dal, grilled paneer/chicken or chana instead of fried stuff; on long drives I sip water with an electrolyte tablet and only one caffeine stick to avoid crash-snacking. My rule of thumb is 70% sensible choices, one small treat if I want it, and a 10-minute bodyweight routine in the room so I feel like I didn’t skip activity altogether.

Pack portable, protein-rich, low-perishables (roasted chana, peanut-butter sachets, mixed nuts, roasted makhana, protein bars with ≥10 g protein and low sugar). At hotels/dhaba/airports choose eggs/curd/paneer/dal/khichdi or grilled tawa sabzi + roti instead of fried/starchy items; ask for dressings/sauces on the side. Sip water regularly from a reusable bottle; limit sugary drinks and late caffeine. Reheat hot food thoroughly and prefer freshly cooked items to reduce foodborne risk. Prioritise protein + fiber at each meal to stay full and limit impulse snacks.
