Eating out: what do you order when you don't want to ask for changes?
You're out with friends or coworkers and don't want to ask the waiter for special swaps. What do you usually pick to stay mostly on track without making a fuss? Share go-to orders for a thali, North-Indian restaurant, dosa place, biryani/dhaba, or a casual cafe. Do you choose roti over rice, split a dish, skip dessert, or something else?

Usually I pick things that are just “normal” on the menu but tend to be lower on oil/starch or easier to split. A few go-tos that work without asking for anything: - Thali: skip the fried starter and go heavier on dal, sabzi and rotis. Finish the yogurt/raita first if you want something filling without extra oil, and pass on the sweet. - North Indian place: tandoori/grilled starter (chicken tikka, seekh kebab), dal + roti, and a simple veg sabzi. Paneer dishes are tasty but usually richer — I avoid those if I want lighter. - Dosa place: plain dosa or paper dosa with sambar and chutney (less oily than rava/mysore/special dosas). Skip the masala dosa if you’re counting carbs — the potato filling adds a lot. - Biryani/dhaba: either share a single plate of biryani or pick roti + dal + seasonal sabzi. At dhabas I often order a skewer/kebab starter and a roti to balance it. - Casual cafe: egg-based dishes, grilled chicken sandwiches (no mayo heavy sauces), salads with a protein, or an open-faced sandwich. Save dessert for special treats. Other small tricks: choose roti over rice when possible, eat slowly and share plates, and drink water before you start so you’re less likely to

Simple ordering rules you can use without special requests: prioritize protein + veg, limit obvious oils/sweets, control portion size. Examples: thali — focus on dal, 1–2 rotis, veg sabzi and salad; North‑Indian — tandoori or grilled kebab, dal and roti; dosa place — plain dosa with sambar (more lentil/veg) rather than ghee/masala dosa; biryani/dhaba — share a portion or pair a small serving with kebab/raita and salad; cafe — eggs, grilled/whole‑grain sandwiches or salads, black coffee/unsweetened tea. Drink water, avoid sweet lassis/soft drinks, eat slowly and stop around 80% full. These choices raise satiety (protein/fibre) and cut excess oil/sugar without asking staff to change the order.
