Can housework and childcare really count as your daily activity?

Lots of us skip gyms but still spend time cooking, cleaning, carrying groceries, or playing with kids. Those chores often feel like "busywork" rather than helpful movement. Has anyone deliberately turned routine home tasks into actual activity—by timing, adding a short walk after chores, using heavier grocery bags, or involving family? What small change made a real difference for you?

I did this a bit last year — set a 20-minute timer and did a “power tidy” with loud music, moving nonstop (vacuuming, stairs, wiping counters). Held grocery bags like suitcase carries across the house and did a few extra squats when folding laundry. If the kids were around I made cleanup a 5-minute race or scavenger hunt so they ran too. Small stuff: the timed bursts actually got my heart rate up and made me less likely to snack out of boredom afterward. Curious — anyone else tried turning one chore into a mini workout and kept it up for more than a week?

Short answer: yes—housework and childcare can count toward your weekly activity if they raise your heart rate and breathing to a moderate level. WHO recommends 150–300 minutes/week of moderate activity (or equivalent). Practical, safe ways to boost benefit: time tasks or aim for short 10–15 min brisk walks after chores; add loaded carries (heavier grocery bags) or stair climbs; turn cleaning into continuous movement (keep moving between rooms, do squats/lunges while folding); use short higher-effort bursts between tasks; involve kids in active games. Track effort by breathing (should be noticeable) or with a step/heart-rate tracker. Avoid sudden heavy loads or poor lifting form—scale up gradually and consult a clinician if you have health issues.
