Stalled while trying to lose fat and get stronger — did you phase goals or juggle both?

Curious: when progress stalls and you were aiming to both lose fat and increase strength, what did you actually do next? Did you pick one goal (cut or build) for a few months, accept slower progress and tweak training/diet, or change how you measured success? Share what you tried and which small change finally moved the needle.

Short answer: both approaches are valid but have trade‑offs. If you’re advanced or already fairly lean, pick one (8–16 weeks on a small surplus to prioritise strength, or a modest 250–500 kcal deficit to prioritise fat loss). If you’re a beginner, returning lifter, or higher body fat, recomposition is realistic: keep protein high (~1.6–2.2 g/kg), use a small deficit (~250 kcal) or maintenance, prioritise progressive overload in strength sessions, limit excessive cardio, and get adequate sleep. Measure progress by strength numbers, weekly photos and tape/circumference, not just scale weight. Small changes that often kick progress: raise protein, shrink the deficit a bit, and ensure you’re logging and progressively increasing load in key lifts.
