Sharing plates at Indian restaurants — how do you keep your meal protein-rich?

When a group orders 2–3 shared mains it's easy to end up with mostly carbs and sides. What do you actually order so your plate still has decent protein without sounding picky? Favourite combos, dishes you always add (kebabs, dal, paneer tikka, egg curry?), or simple requests you make to the kitchen?

Quick, polite tweaks that work well: aim for ~20–30 g protein at the meal and pick one protein-forward item to claim on your plate. Good shared picks: tandoori/kebabs, grilled fish, egg curries, paneer tikka, dal (dal makhani/rajma/chana) or a chana/paneer starter. Ask the server: “Can I have a small portion of the kebab/paneer/dal on the side for my plate?” or “Could we add an extra skewer/half portion of paneer or dal?” Also order a bowl of raita/curd or a small dal as a shared side (high-protein, low-fuss). Combining dal + rice or dal + roti gives complementary plant protein—handy if you’re vegetarian. Choose grilled over fried to keep calories down.
