Machines vs free weights for beginners — which do you prefer and why?

Beginners at the gym are often told to stick to machines for safety or to start with barbells to build 'real' strength. Which approach do you recommend or choose for someone new — machines (cables/selectorized) or free weights (dumbbells/barbells)? Share the reasons: confidence, learning technique, progress, convenience, or anything that changed your view.

Short answer: both have roles. Machines (and cables) are good for very new lifters or when technique/coaching is limited — they control the path, reduce stabilizer demand, build confidence, and let you safely practice loading and progressive overload. Free weights train stabilizers and intermuscular coordination and transfer better to daily tasks and strength gains, but need lighter starts, coaching, and slower technical progress. Practical plan: begin with machine/cable or simple dumbbell/kettlebell moves (goblet squat, RDL variation) to learn patterns and build baseline strength; add barbell compound lifts (squat, deadlift, press, bench) once technique is reliable or under supervision. Prioritize progressive overload, good form, and coaching/spotting rather than choosing one tool dogmatically.
