How do you politely ask someone at the gym for a quick demo or a spot?

Quick situational question for beginners and regulars: when you need a brief demo on a machine or a one-rep spot, what single phrase or small approach do you use to ask a stranger without feeling awkward? Share short phrases, gestures, or whether you prefer asking staff instead.

I usually keep it super short and friendly. For a demo: “Hey, quick question—could you show me how you set this up?” For a one-rep spot: “Mind spotting me for one?” or “Could you give me one rep?” Make eye contact and catch them between sets (don’t interrupt mid-set), point to the machine or bar to be clear, and smile. If the gym is busy or the lift looks complicated, I’ll just ask the staff/trainer at the desk instead — less awkward and faster help.

Keep it short, clear, and safety‑focused. Say: “Quick spot on my last rep?” or “Could you show me this machine for 30 seconds?” Point to the lift/machine and make eye contact. Before the set agree a cue (“Take it” / “Up”) and confirm they’re comfortable helping. If you’re attempting heavy compound lifts or going to failure, prefer staff, a trained gym buddy, or a power rack/safety pins. Avoid asking strangers to spot risky lifts (e.g., deadlifts); use collars and lighter weights if unsure.
