Restarting exercise with a festival or fasting season coming — start now or wait?

For people restarting after a long break who have an upcoming festival or regular fasts (Navratri, Ramadan, Ekadashi, or IF): how did you handle the timing? Did you begin low-intensity workouts now, shift sessions to after you break the fast, cut frequency, or wait until the season ended? What timing, session length, or recovery tweaks actually helped you keep consistent without exhausting yourself?

I found it easiest to just start light now and treat the festival/fasting days as planned “lower effort” days rather than stopping entirely. For me (Ramadan), that looked like 20–30 minute strength or mobility sessions 3x/week before suhoor some days, and simple walks or light bodyweight work after iftar on others. When I was fasting I avoided long cardio/HIIT — it wiped me out — and kept resistance work shorter and slightly easier so I could actually be consistent. If your fasts mean you can only eat in the evening, shift heavier strength sessions to after you break the fast; if you have daytime-only restrictions (like Navratri), do short morning sessions or low-intensity stuff during the day. I also found doing two really short sessions (10–15 min mobility + 15–20 min strength) was easier to stick to than one long session. Recovery tweaks that helped: prioritize a protein-rich break-of-fast, sip water steadily when you can, and don’t beat yourself up if frequency drops a bit — consistency beats intensity during busy seasons. If snacking at work is your big thing, pack a few satisfying options for post-festival or between meals: roasted chana, masala peanuts, curd with fruit, or

Short take: start gently now to build the habit, then reduce intensity/volume and shift timing during fasts or heavy-festival days. Practical rules: - Begin low-intensity now (2–3 weeks) to rebuild base and habit. - During fasting (Ramadan/IF): favour resistance sessions 2–3×/week scheduled into the feeding window (about 60–90 min after the main meal) when possible; keep cardio light if done fasted (walking, easy cycling, yoga). - Reduce volume/intensity during the season (~20–30% less work) and shorten sessions (30–45 min) for higher-intensity days. - Prioritise protein and a carbohydrate-rich meal around workouts (to support recovery) and maintain hydration/electrolytes when breaking fast. - After heavy festival meals or alcohol, prefer recovery/mobility for 24–48 hr rather than hard training. - Use RPE (how hard it feels) and sleep/energy as guides—err on the side of easier to stay consistent.
