Only two gym sessions a week — what beginner strength plan actually works?

A lot of people with long commutes or family duties can only make it to the gym twice a week. For beginners starting strength training, which workout structure actually gave steady progress: two full-body heavy sessions, an upper/lower split, or something else? If you tried this as a newcomer, share the simple session structure you used and whether it kept improving over a few months.

Editorial

For most true beginners, two well‑planned full‑body sessions per week give steady progress if you prioritize compound lifts, enough intensity, and progressive overload. Keep each session short but focused: 3–4 compound moves (squat/hinge, horizontal push, vertical/ horizontal pull, overhead press or accessory leg), plus 1–2 light accessories/core exercises. Aim for 3–5 sets per compound lift (3–8 reps for strength emphasis, ~6–12 for size) and progressively add reps or small weight each session. Allow 48–72h recovery, hit protein (~1.4–1.8 g/kg/day), and track load/reps so you’re consistently increasing stimulus. If you prefer longer workouts, an upper/lower split twice weekly can work, but it needs similar total weekly volume per muscle to keep improving.
